Today I've got two games for you. I decided to put them in a two pack because a) they're both vertical shooters, b) they're both competition based, and c) they were both recommended to me by Nullsleep.
Recca (sometimes Summer Carnival '92 Recca, or Recca Summer Carnival '92, or etc) was released by Naxat for their Summer Carnival '92, a shooter competition. I can't find any information on this competition, it seems like Recca itself is the only surviving artifact from the whole thing.
Recca is one of the most intense games i've ever seen on an NES. According to wikipedia, "Recca was known for having high sprite counts while generally maintaining fast speeds." Basically, this means there's a lot of shit going on without much or any slowdown. It's sort of like a cult classic. Plenty of different weapons / power levels for each weapon. The 20 track soundtrack written by Nobuyuki Shioda is included in .nsf format.
While Recca had several different weapons, the only power-ups in this game are extra lives. Instead, your ship is equipped with 2 modes of fire, a constant, straight ahead blast, and a spread out shot with a reduced rate of fire. In addition to those, you've got a sort of floating barrier you can put up, which takes damage untill you put it down, or if the read out in the corner reads 0%. It recharges while not in use.
And like most modern vertical shooters, the point is mostly surviving, rather than destroying. You'll have to weave your way in and out of tons of slow moving bullets, and all that stuff that comes with games like Giga Wing and Ikaruga.
